Tram services to Wolverhampton to reopen early on Friday 8 December

A full tram service between Grand Central and Wolverhampton St George’s will resume two days ahead of schedule, before the weekend.

The Midland Metro Alliance completed the tram track replacement works along the Bilston Road in Wolverhampton ahead of schedule on 2 December 2017. Essential testing by National Express Midland Metro, operator of the tram service, was due to be completed on Sunday 10 December allowing a full tram service resuming between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. However, a full service to and from the city of Wolverhampton will resume at 0515 on Friday 8 December 2017.

Phil Hewitt, Head of Metro Development for Transport for West Midlands, said: “This is fantastic news for Metro users and for Wolverhampton as it means services will resume into the heart of the city exactly in time for Christmas. These were essential maintenance works that had to be done and I would like to thank the Midland Metro Alliance for their hard work in finishing ahead of schedule, and also the public for their patience during the works.”

Tom Stables, Managing Director of National Express West Midlands, which operates the tram, said: “I’m delighted that we can start running a full tram service again – and ahead of schedule. Its great news for our customers travelling to and from Wolverhampton this Christmastime. The teams at the Midland Metro and the Midland Metro Alliance have worked very hard together to get the works and testing completed as soon as possible.”

National Express Midland Metro operates the tram service on behalf of Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). The route between Wolverhampton and Birmingham also serves also areas such as West Bromwich and Wednesbury.
